How do you see the evolution of feminism from your early activism? What’s changed, and what still needs to?
The women's movement was often concerned with preventing crimes against women—domestic violence, rape, child abuse and more. That's still here, but there is now also an emphasis on women in leadership roles, including that of the President of the U.S. Other nations, from India to England and Germany, are ahead of us in utilizing all leadership, not just the white and male population.

Despite progress, setbacks remain—in reproductive rights, the gender pay gap, etc. How do you stay hopeful?
I've seen over the years that hope is a form of planning. You're unlikely to advance if you can't even imagine it. Since we are communal animals, it helps us to be hopeful in company, and that's what movements are for, from rebelling against British rule to rebelling against racist rules.

How can men play a bigger role in advancing gender equality & supporting feminist values?
Our families are crucial in shaping our behavior, so it's critical for men to play an equal role in infant and childcare. It also increases the empathy and leadership value of the men themselves.

Start where you are: A safer school crossing in your neighborhood? A church that holds neighborhood meetings? An inspiring local political campaign that needs help? Neighbors of different occupations and/or races you might bring together in your living room?

What legacy do you hope Gloria’s Foundation—and the broader movement—will leave for future generations?
A world in which the adjectives most people are born with—race, class, ethnicity, language—don't confine you or keep you from learning from friends with different experiences.
